Yet the Yogis Drink Bubbles!

[caption id="attachment_327" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Delicous Italian cake prepared by Lenny Kennedy"] [/caption] On Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 at 7pm, ten frozen yogis arrive at The Imperial Boat Club in Putney for an hour long class with Yoga Will Save the World’s Rebecca Wilson. There is nothing unusual about this as we are all regular attendees of this class. But, today we all have the hint of a cheeky grin, a twinkle in our eyes and an extra spring in our jump-throughs. It’s the last class of the year and we’ve been told that Rebecca’s friends at http://www.sommeliercellar.com are coming along afterwards to treat us to some of their favourite festive fizz. I’ve never wobbled so much in tree pose or fidgeted so much in Savasana. And that was before the wine. I felt like a kid who’d been allowed a chocolate biscuit before dinner. There’s something naughty about the thought of practising yoga and then drinking alcohol. It’s an unlikely (and somewhat controversial) combination – yoga and booze, but I found that the two complement each other nicely and share a lot of benefits. Separately, both wine and yoga have been scientifically proven to have benefits for your health. So putting them together isn’t naughty at all, in fact it’s good for you! (I suggest yoga before booze, not the other way round). Wine contains anti-bacteria agents and something called procyanidins that both work in wonderful ways in your body to improve your health. Alcohol helps to thin your blood and let it flow more smoothly through your body. This helps prevent clots that can lead to strokes and also allows your heart to work a little less. All of the inverted poses in Yoga give your heart a break as well. Your heart works tirelessly to ensure that freshly oxygenated blood gets up to your brain and sensory organs. When inverting (headstand, shoulder stand etc.) the pressure is reversed. There are internal mechanisms that sense the increase in blood and slow the flow, reducing your blood pressure and heart rate. Both wine (in moderation) and yoga also reduce stress levels, reduce the risk of diabetes and do all the right things to prolong and enrich your life. At the risk of sounding like a medical journal, I won’t go into any more detail. So, after an hour of vinyasa flow, James from SommelierCellar poured us each a cold glass of Franciacorta, an Italian sparkling wine. I’m no wine expert and don’t normally take my time drinking wine, but there’s something about that post yoga mellowness and savouring that first sip of wine. Everything seemed to move in slow motion and I felt every little bubble and tasted all the different flavours. It was delicious. It was also nice to be able to sit and chat to the other people in the class. On a normal day, we all shoot off and go our separate ways. It was nice to take the time to sit and chill out and get to know each other. Yoga followed by wine is good for the heart, mind and soul. In my opinion – we should do this every week.
